Intersection Accidents
CALIFORNIA INTERSECTION ACCIDENT LAWYERS. CAR CRASHES AT INTERSECTIONS CAUSE INJURY AND DEATH.
Motor vehicle accidents are a major California killer, due to the state's numerous roads and freeways, high number of drivers, and of course, CA's "car culture." An alarmingly high number of accidents take place at intersections causing death and serious injury. Crashes involving cars, motorcycles, trucks, buses, bicycles and pedestrians at intersections or crossings are due to many factors including speed, drunk driving, lawlessness, and poor road safety and maintenance. Intersection Types by Traffic Control
Safety at intersections is guided by the traffic signs and signals that are installed at each location. Intersection types can be classified according to how they are controlled by traffic signs and signals. Following are types of intersections by signal and sign:
- Uncontrolled Intersections: No signs or signals exist, or possibly a general warning sign. Right of way rules flow of traffic.
- Yield-Sign Crossings: Usually governed by a "yield" sign
- Stop-Sign Intersections: Possessing at least one or more stop signs for two-way or four-way stops.
- Traffic Signal (Light) Intersections: Electric traffic lights, going from red, yellow, to green guide traffic flow. Some crossings have a specific light or lane for turning right, left and/or making a U-turn. In some states, including California, turning right on red is permissible. In certain areas, traffic stops completely to allow for pedestrian crossing. (see signs below)
- Traffic Circles: Also known as rotary or roundabout.
- Box Junction: Entry to the intersection is prohibited unless the exit is clear.
Types of Intersections by Direction
Intersections can also be classified by the number of directions or segments incorporated. For instance a crossing where 3 roads come together is called a referred to as a 3-way intersection. Here's a breakdown.
- 3-Way Intersection: Also called a T-Junction or Y-Junction, depending on the road trajectory
- 4-Way Crossing: The most common intersection, usually involving 2 perpendicular streets crossing each other.
- 5-Way Intersection: More frequent in urban areas with non-linear grids.
- 6-Way Junctions: Normally where three roads meet and cross.
- 7-Way Intersections and more: These types of intersections are rare and can be dangerous due to the complexity of the junction.
Intersection Turns
At intersections, vehicles have to opportunity to choose their direction: straight or turn. Turning is guided by signs, signals with or without arrows, and lanes. Signs dictating turns include:
- One Way
- No Turn on Red
- No Right Turn
- No Left Turn
- No Entry
Accidents at Intersections
Intersections are dangerous for drivers, bikers and pedestrians alike. Even adhering to all of the guidelines and safety instructions for proceeding at intersections, crashes still happen due to speed, drunk driving and human error. And unfortunately, some drivers do not follow the rules of the road. In other instances, traffic signs and signals are insufficient and drivers are not at fault. Common accidents at intersections can include:
- Running a stop sign or a red light can result in a head-on collision and have deadly consequences for all involved.
- Turning left or right without taking all proper safety precautions can lead to side-impact crashes.
- Not paying attention to traffic or signs and signals can result in read end accidents.
Injury at Intersections
Brain injury, spinal injury, broken bones (arm, leg, collarbone, and pelvis), burn injuries and death are the devastating results of car crashes in California. Wearing a seat belt can help mitigate injury. Bicyclists, pedestrians, and motorcyclists are at high risk for injury since they are not protected by the metal shield of a vehicle.
