Ways to Avoid Accidents and Injuries on Cruise Ships

The kids are almost out of school and employees everywhere have scheduled their summer vacations. Many of them will opt to go on a cruise this summer. What could be better than a floating luxury hotel that takes you to destinations of your dreams? While a cruise vacation is a lot of fun, it's important to remember that it is not without risk. Avoiding accidents on a cruise ship is something to take seriously and if it happens to you, it's necessary to know what to do.

There are several types of common injuries on the premises of cruise ships. They range from weather related issues, to engineering problems, to passenger created emergencies.

First, during bad weather, never run on deck and always hold on to the handrails while walking around, many guests on cruise ships have reported broken legs caused by this type of behavior. If possible, stay in your room below deck. Be alert and watch for loose objects that may fall out of a drawer or any doors that may fly open. In the case of a power outage, stay in your room and wait for any announcements from the crew. Always remember to try and stay calm.

Next, try to limit your alcohol consumption. Losing your inhibitions on the high seas can cause slow reaction times and will make it very difficult to follow instructions from the crew in the case of an emergency. Along with this, behave responsibly! There are always consequences for one's actions.

Also, be sure not to overlook the importance of the safety drills before leaving dock. The instructions given during these drills are an integral part of your survival in the case of an emergency. Listen closely and know where your muster station is just in case.

Finally, use common sense while aboard the ship. If your gut is telling you not to do something, don't do it. Getting drunk and exploring a dark upper deck at 3am should not be on your "To Do" list. Accidents can happen aboard a cruise ship just like everywhere else. Use common sense and stay safe.
