The Importance of Proper Motorcycle Training
Similar as with an automobile the proper motorcycle training is needed. Your first step of many in avoiding a motorcycle accident is to take a one hour introductory motorcycle course. This will determine if riding is for you and whether you want to pursue it. Should the course interest you, the same organization, the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) offers a course leading to a motorcycle license, if passed successfully. In addition, the road test will be waived by most states if you pass the MSF course.
This course primarily teaches safety. There is a little practice of plain riding on the motorcycle but the maneuvers that can save your life are emphasized. Stopping a motorcycle is strongly taught. The idea that wheels must be straight before a hard break is mentioned over and over. A hard stop with the front wheel turned will put you on the ground. Both hand and foot breaks must be used, not one without the other.
Looking before entering a turn is part of the course. You must look before leaning the motorcycle into the turn. The classroom study part of the course repeats the need to check intersections carefully, especially cars turning in front and making a left turn. Intersections are major factors in accidents, and injury lawyers are hired because of the severity of an injury when colliding with a turning automobile. At a light, stay in gear for a quick getaway if a driver behind you is not going to stop.
After learning the facts about safe motorcycle riding, practice what you have learned and never ride beyond your ability. Foolish riding and taking chances are also deeds to avoid.
