The Effects of Tire Inflation on Auto Accidents
Every year there are more and more car accidents. Many of these accidents can be linked back to driver error. The error is as simple as poorly inflated tires. Whether a tire is over or under inflated greatly affects the maneuverability and safety of the vehicle’s driving ability.
Poorly inflated tires are the cause of many things. For one, a tire can lose traction and grip if the tire is not inflated properly. When a vehicle encounters rain, snow, loose gravel or dirt the tire cannot grip the road as it was designed to do. Also, during high speed or excessive speed when turning, the tire loses its ability to grip and therefore becomes dangerous to driver and passengers. When a tire is over or under inflated, it will not wear evenly. This means it will wear out quicker and have to be replaced sooner.
Each year, there are more than 40,000 fatal accidents. If drivers were to take the time to make sure their tires are inflated as specified, imagine how many lives could be saved. The tire specifications are listed on the inside door frame, usually on the driver’s side. Also, some tires have the specifications listed on the tire itself. Many tire companies will include checking the inflation and rotate the tires for free when you purchase your tires from them. Tire companies rely on their drivers and passengers having safe journeys every time.
The steps to follow for tire maintenance are simple. Check tire pressure with a tire gauge weekly. Make sure you check them when the tires are cool in temp. This would be in the mornings preferably. Lastly, add or decrease pressure as needed and called for by manufacturer’s specifications.
Tire inflation is such a simple thing to keep up with. In comparison, it can cost a driver a great deal if not kept up with. Drive safe and check the tire inflation regularly.
