The Advice for Avoiding Motorcycle Accidents

Los Angeles is the perfect place to ride motorcycles year-round, but motorcycle accidents can be deadly or can render the rider paralyzed or mentally incapacitated for life. As there is no barrier between the rider and the road, even a small accident can have terrible physical consequences. For your safety and the safety of others it is absolutely essential that you follow these simple yet life saving tips to avoid and prevent common motorcycle accidents.

When riding a motorcycle, the only protection between you and the road is your gear. Wear leather boots, pants, jackets and gloves to protect your body from serious damage if you slide out. More importantly, protect your neck and head. Wear a helmet to protect your head and a racing neck brace to protect from neck injuries wearing a helmet might cause.

Before going out on a long ride, make sure that your motorcycle is in a tip-top shape. If it is a new bike, spend some time breaking it in by taking it out on short jaunts and medium speeds in your local area, on roads that are well-policed for speeding. This will break in the engine and all the moving parts of the bike without driving at dangerously high speeds. It will also give you the chance to become comfortable and familiar with how your bike functions and responds, so than in the event of an accident you can easily guide the motorcycle to safety. Additionally, make sure all repairs are fully completed before you head out on a tour. Driving the bike regularly for 3 to 4 weeks should be plenty of time to break in a new motorcycle or new repairs fully.

When riding in groups, place the most experienced rider in the lead position, on the left side of the lane. This makes it easier for the rest of the group to see the leader. When with a group that drives badly, find a way to excuse yourself without conflict.

Drive defensively at all times. Avoid tailgating, instead keep 2 car lengths or more between you and the car in front of you. Enter intersections with another larger vehicle on your right side or from the left lane if riding alone. This provides a physical barrier between you and oncoming side traffic. If you or a loved one has been in a motorcycle accident, contact a personal injury lawyer immediately.
