Super Poligrip Lawsuit with Glaxosmithkline
Glaxosmithkline’s product Super Poligrip is one of the more popular denture adhesives on the market. However, two class action product liability lawsuits have been brought against the manufacturer. One of the lawsuits was settled out of court, the other is pending while an investigation is conducted. Both lawsuits claim that Super Poligrip brought about hyperzincemia, from the high levels of zinc, in consumers.
While zinc is a necessary mineral for the human body, having too much in your blood stream can cause damage to the neurological system, in addition to damaging the digestive system, liver and stomach. The highest tolerated adult daily dose on record is 40mg, while the recommended dose is between 11 and 15mg a day. Super Poligrip has been found to expose its users to over 300mg of zinc a day.
There have been many complaints that there is a link between the use of Super Poligrip and neurological damage in consumers, especially long-time users of the product who are now suffering severe and debilitating side effects from hyperzincemia. Some of the symptoms of hyperzincemia are vomiting, fever, balance problems, difficulty walking, unexplained pain, loss of sensation and numbness in your arms and legs. Hyperzincemia can also cause problems with the absorption of other minerals your body needs, such as copper. Copper deficiencies can cause skin sores, hair loss, fatigue, diarrhea, paleness and stunted or slowed growth. Hyperzincemia is often misdiagnosed because its symptoms mirror those of other chronic conditions.
Most of the zinc people need daily is provided by their diets in everyday foods. The recommended daily intake is 8mg for women and 11mg for me. However, products like Super Poligrip, in addition to others like toothpaste, can also expose your family to high levels of zinc.
If you have used Super Poligrip and are exhibiting any signs of hyperzincemia, please talk to your doctor immediately. If it is caught early, hyperzincemia is treatable and can prevent irreversible side effects. You may also want to consider contacting an injury attorney. Gross negligence by large pharmaceutical companies will only stop when the consumers demand the company take responsibility for its actions.
