Steps Passengers Should Take after a Bus Accident
Passengers that use a public transportation are at great risk for bodily harm, especially in the event of a bus accident. In many cases buses are not be equipped with seat belts, and unsecured objects like backpacks, laptops, etc. can go flying through the air, both of which can substantially add to the possibility of serious injury.
If involved in a bus accident, there are certain steps that should be taken to ensure the proper medical and legal remedies are adhered to. After the accident, the passenger should first check to see if they are injured, if they are, they should seek medical attention immediately, if they are not, they should stay calm and do not leave the scene of the accident. A person should never interfere with emergency procedures, and should not attempt to perform any type of medical procedure on other passengers unless they are licensed to do so. When the first responders are on the scene allow them to perform their duties. If you are uninjured and of sound mind, you should immediately call 911 to report the accident, never assume someone else has done so. A person should follow all instructions of law enforcement on the scene, and all instructions of medical personal at the scene and or in the hospital. Maintain and keep all relevant paper work from the hospital and or the bus company and or witnesses to the accident. Taking the time to document the accident and keeping all records may prove to be very important if a passenger has to seek the services of a professional accident attorney.
If you are uninjured or your injuries are minor enough for you to walk, try and move a safe distance from the disabled bus, as gas may be leaking and an explosion could cause serious injury. For those who are injured, follow all directions from doctors and or nurses at the hospital regarding your treatment and or aftercare. Make sure you go to any follow up medical appointments. Keep records of all dates and times relevant to the accident and medical appointments. Check into your states statute of limitations to file a suit for damages due to the accident; time limits vary from state to state.
And lastly, if you have been seriously injured, consult with a personal injury attorney that has experience with public transportation accidents so you can properly be advised of your legal rights to compensation for you the injuries you've endured.
