Purpose and Functionality of Protective Motorcycle Equipment

The odds in favor of motorcycle accidents occurring, is a lot higher than car accidents. Job number one for the motorcycle rider is to minimize the injury in such an occurrence. Safe riding and not exceeding the skill level is a must along with following logical rules, such as ride with a clear mind and know the motorcycle.

When an accident occurs, protection is the key to survival. A motorcycle is at least 300 pounds and many are between 500-700 pounds. Just the act of parking requires the putting down of the kick stand immediately upon cutting off the engine. If not, an accident will happen. A motorcycle of such great weight cannot be held back and will fall on your foot and leg and damage will be done. To limit the injury boots reaching above the ankle need to be worn. At least, depending upon the strength of the motorcycle boots, damage to the ankle area will be limited.

Looking outside, bikers in tea shirts, sneakers and shorts are a common sight. This is pure foolishness. Long pants must be worn as a minimum along with the boots. Long sleeve shirts are also a minimum. The optimum equipment should consist of motorcycle pants or leather chaps, along with a jacket with back, shoulder and elbow padding or certified armor. When that bike goes down you want these parts protected. Road rash, a minor injury is avoided with the aforementioned items. If it is hot, there are mesh jackets with armor available.

Gloves of a fairly good quality can protect the hands and fingers and some riders consider them an absolute necessity when riding a motorcycle.

The helmet is the most important protective equipment and should fit properly. Squeezing the head will distract the rider and a loose helmet might come off. German style helmets offer little protection, while full face helmets offer the most. Snell Institute rated helmets are the best but all helmets should at least be DOT (Department of Transportation) approved with their sticker on the back of the helmet. A compromise may suit some riders in the guise of an open face helmet with a shield attached.

An excellent Los Angeles injury attorney is always available to work with you. The attorney can determine who was at fault in the accident and watch over your interests. There is no reason compensation should not be returned to you, if you were entirely innocent in the accident.
