Left Hand Turn Motorcycle Accidents
Motorcycle accidents that happen as a result of a poorly taken left hand turn are one of the most common to happen to a motorcycle rider. Intersections are dangerous for many reasons. One cause of an intersection mishap is the tendency to run lights which is becoming prevalent in many urban areas. The only way to counter this is to be extra vigilant in looking in all directions while on a motorcycle.
There are drivers of cars and motorcycle, though having a license, still turn behind an oncoming car. This means the two cars pass each other and then make the left turn. A left turn must be in front of the other vehicle making a left. To avoid this, go out into the intersection but not so far as to make the car turning left in front of you forced to pass your vehicle before the turn.
Motorcyclists must be sure the car is making a left turn and not just have the left-turn signal on. This entails moving out slowly into the intersection and making a left turn. Two things need to be watched, the turning car and the car to the right of that car that is going straight ahead. That car can hit the motorcycle, while the motorcycle is making the turn.
If something develops unforeseen in the intersection evasive action on the part of the motorcyclist must take place, which is to swerve to avoid hitting the car or the car hitting the biker. Do not lay a bike down; this is only for the movies.
When taking the swerving action, do not brake. Braking while the bike is not going in a straight path will have the rider down on the side of the bike sliding, if going at a sufficient speed. A personal injury lawyer will be happy to look into an accident situation, should one develop at an intersection or anywhere else.
