Fatal Auto Collision Involving Inglewood Police Officer
Early in the morning of Tuesday May 24, 2011 a police cruiser collided with a Range Rover and causing an unfortunate and fatal car accident. The Los Angeles Times reported that the accident occurred at 1:00 a.m. at the intersection of Prairie and Manchester Avenue's in Inglewood, California.
Three Inglewood Police Department patrol cars were driving north on Prairie Avenue with lights and sirens on route to aid a fellow police officer involved in a home invasion shooting. Loretta Gerard, 45 years old, was ejected from the passenger seat of the SUV when one of the police cruisers hit the front right side of the vehicle, causing it to spin around.
Gerard fatal injury was the result of hitting the concrete; damages included severe lacerations to the neck, arms and abdomen as well as her face and head. It was not determined whether Gerard had been wearing a seat belt when she was hurled from the SUV. The driver of the SUV and the police officers involved in the crash suffered minor injuries. It was stated by Officer Travis Ruiz, who spoke for the California Highway Patrol, that three police cruisers were dispatched, the first cruiser cleared the intersection, but the second cruiser collided with the SUV who was seen heading east at that time. The third patrol car on route was not involved in the accident.
Inglewood police officials have turned over their collection of video recorded by each patrol car to its Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team that is now handling the case. The Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team also collected footage from the red light camera, to be reviewed. It is still unclear which vehicle failed to yield the right away. Officials are still investigating the case.
