Boating Accident Leaves One Dead and One Missing
The body of 16-year old Dora Schwendtner was recovered by the Pennsylvania Fire Department Marine Unit 1, after it was discovered by a fisherman on July 9, 2010 at 4:45 AM. Her body was identified at the medical examiners office in Pennsylvania.
Schwendtner had been one of the passengers on a Hungarian Methodist church “Ride the Ducks” boating trip that took place along the Delaware River in Pennsylvania.
The duck boat was struck by a barge on July 7, 2010. However, the boat engine had caught fire and stopped working before the fatal accident occurred. The duck boat had been drifting on the water prior to being hit by the barge. It is unsure whether or not the barge would have struck the boat had it been operational.
The search for another passenger, 20-year-old Szabolcs Prem was called off the evening of Thursday July 9, 2010. It is believed that Prem is dead because his body had been seen floating near the barge on the morning of July 9.
Several people were injured in the accident along with two of the boats crewmembers. Two of the injured people were admitted to the hospital. One of them had severe shock and brain injury, the other a broken jaw.
Schwendtner and Prem had planned on returning to Hungary with the rest of their tour group on July 23, 2010 however due to the accident many of the passengers returned sooner.
Passengers told investigators that the boat they were on that had been hit by the barge had been disabled for several hours before the Coast Guard was notified. However they also said they were waiting for another boat to come and get them which indicates that management had notified the Coast Guard.
The company that owns “Ride the Ducks” posted notification on its website Thursday that operations had been suspended nationwide pending investigation. The accident is being investigated by the NTSB to find out if the breakdown of the “ducks” boat was due to the owners or operators negligence.
Many concerns have been raised about boating accidents. Rout and passenger boat accidents are sadly becoming more common. It is believed that this incident was preventable.
