Bicycle Accidents and What to Do if You've been Injured

If you're in a bicycle accident, the first thing you should do is seek medical attention. If medical attention is not immediately available and you are of sound mind, an attempt to bandage yourself and stop any extreme bleeding should be made as soon as possible. Remember to always carry your cell phone with you when you go for a ride so that you can call 911 if an accident occurs.

If the accident was caused by the negligence of another, you should take as many notes as you can about what happen and who was involved. If you don't have a pen and paper handy, ask a witness or the other party involved if they have something you can use, or use your cell phone's video recorder if you can. You'll need to make sure you record what happened right away, while it's still fresh in your mind. If your cell phone has a camera and video recording capabilities, use those as well to document the accident.

Don't worry too much about how you write things down, or how you take videos or photos, just record as much as you can. If all you can remember is "I was biking down the corner of Main Street and Fifth, and then I was upside down on the sidewalk" write that down. Be sure to record the time and place as exactly as you can. Write down a cross-street, house number or any geographical markers. Make note of which direction you were riding as well as what part of the road you were physically riding on. Those could all be important to the accident attorney you hire if they are needed.

If you can, get contact information from anyone around you; all witnesses to the accident and of course any parties who may have caused the accident. Remember to get badge numbers and names from Police or Emergency techs. If the accident takes place in a heavily crowed area, ask around if anyone took a video of the incident as many people have started to record videos on their phone of accidents taking place around them.

An uninjured friend can be a big help, asking around to see if anyone saw anything and recording their names and phone numbers. They can also hold your notes if you have to go to the hospital.

Last but not least, if you have been involved in any type of bicycle accident, make sure to contact an accident lawyer as soon as you can. Even if you believe that the accident was your fault, a professional lawyer may find that it was caused by another party or even a defective feature on your bicycle. Most attorneys will give you a consultation free of charge, so there is no reason not to contact them. And if they find negligence they will work hard to make sure that you get the compensation you deserve for your injuries.
